” It’s hard to believe that just over a year ago I was spending up to $150 a month on skin care products. Yep, you read that right. Some of you may relate too. I used to buy expensive department store or mail-order skin care products to fight aging, wrinkles, age spots and adult acne. I used to think the more expensive the skin care product, the better the quality. Some worked, some didn’t. In the end, I spent a fortune without really getting great results. Worst of all, most contained toxic chemicals, such as alpha and beta hydroxy acids (glycolic acid), hydroquinone, parabens, oxybenzone, vitamin A compounds (retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate, retinol), and other toxic ingredients. And little did I know, I didn’t have to spend a fortune to get the best skin of my life.

But then, I started to think about my skin care products and slowly began making DIY skin care products with simple ingredients – mostly from my kitchen pantry. Now I regularly use these DIY skin care products and save a TON – I spend just about $15 a month for everything! “

Identify Your Skin Type

Why do I need to know my skin type?

In order to adopt a proper face mask, it is important to first identify your skin type.  Your skin type can even change from season to season, and with age.

How to Identify Your Skin Type

There are five types of skin: Dry, Oily, Combination, Normal and Sensitive. You can easily figure out what type of skin you have. The first thing in the morning is to gently tap different parts of your face with a tissue or ink-absorbing paper. In front of a lamp, you can see clearly how much oil is on the paper. If there is little or no oil on the paper, your skin is dry. If the paper shows oil on the forehead and nose, your skin is normal/mixed. If the paper is full of oil, your skin is oily.

This is the check list:

Skin TypeAfter washing my face and waiting 1 hour, my skin:
DryFeels itchy and tight, has some flakey patches
OilyIs shiny and feels greasy, especially in my T-zone
CombinationIs oily in my T-zone, but dry or normal on my cheeks and jawline
NormalFeels good and even, not too oily or dry
SensitiveSometimes gets red, irritated, itchy or inflamed

Help skin absorb nutrients

No matter if you apply facial mask or other skin care products, any skin care products will be poorly effective if the nutrients contained in them cannot be fully absorbed. How to help skin absorb these nutrients? Massage is a very simple and effective method. However, the vast majority of people can not grasp the correct massage method. This makes the absorption of nutrients very poor. How to master the massage method correctly, please read this article: 7 steps of facial massage

( Time: You should have a facial massage after you remove the mask and wash your face.)

Notes for homemade facial mask

Masks are a special treatment and should not be used every day. This mask is best used once a week. For sensitive skin, it is best to do it every other week.
Before using the mask, you should use a mild cleanser to clean the face. Make sure you pat your face dry before wearing a mask. After finishing the mask, you should wash your face with cold water, close the pores, and calm the skin. Any product applied to the face after using the mask should be gentle.
Usually mask users describe the pain, itching or pulse sensation when using facial mask. Depending on the type and formula of the mask, this strange feeling can be attributed to skin tension or reaction to acids and vitamins.
If you feel uncomfortable wearing a mask, wash it off.
